What questions concern us today and in the future?
How do we generate electricity from sun, wind and water and how can we store it? How do we obtain energy and new raw materials from waste? How do we produce recyclable plastic? How is a vaccine produced? How is beer brewed? What keeps a diaper tight? And what are shower gel, shampoo or skin lotion actually made of? Why does food taste and smell so good? Process engineering answers all these questions.
What needs to be done and how can it be done?
Become an engineer in process engineering and help shape our future in a way that protects the climate and conserves resources.
Process engineering researches, develops and implements processes to technically change substances in large quantities. For this purpose, process engineering uses biological, chemical and physical processes as well as mathematics and computer science. The aim is to produce usable intermediate or end products such as fuels, sugars, plastics, proteins, cosmetics, dyes, alcohols, pesticides, medicines and much more - and all this in a sustainable and future-proof manner. By combining specialist knowledge with technical and communication skills, we train engineers who think in an interdisciplinary and solution-oriented way.
What can you expect during your studies?
The study of process engineering enables you to recognize and formulate laws that can be used to plan, calculate, design, build and operate apparatus, machines and entire production plants. The required product qualities are to be achieved with safe and environmentally compatible processes.
In the bachelor's program, the focus is on basic training. The focus is on both the methodological and theoretical fundamentals of process engineering. At the beginning of the program, mathematical and scientific subjects predominate. As you progress, you will become familiar with all areas of process engineering: chemical, mechanical, thermal, biological and systems process engineering. Numerous practical courses and innovative teaching methods facilitate the understanding of the theoretical basics. The bachelor thesis as the first scientific paper is gladly done in cooperation with research projects and practice partners. The TU Hamburg has numerous Erasmus-Plus partnerships with European partner universities and supports studying abroad.
What are the follow-up options to the degree program?
With the bachelor's degree, you acquire your first academic degree that qualifies you for a profession and you become an engineer. You can already start your professional life.
And of course you can also start a master's degree. The specializations of the bachelor's program are arranged and coordinated in such a way that you are optimally prepared for further master's studies and a seamless transition to subsequent master's programs at the TU Hamburg is made possible.
In which professional fields can you work?
The process engineering program trains engineers for whom there will be a high demand today and in the future. The spectrum of employers ranges from industrial companies to energy suppliers, utilities and waste management companies to engineering and planning offices and authorities, but also research institutions.

All modalities for admission to the bachelor's program "Process Engineering" are regulated in the statutes governing the study program. The Technical University of Hamburg conducts an online application procedure in the bachelor's degree programs. Criteria for admission are the Abitur grade and the subject grades in mathematics from the last four semesters. Admission to the 1st semester is only for the winter semester. The application period is from May to July 15th. The requirements for admission and the details of the procedure can be found here.
The general conditions for examinations at the TUHH are defined by the General Study and Examination Regulations (ASPO) and the Subject-Specific Study and Examination Regulations (FSPO). The Module Handbook describes the concrete design of the modules provided for in the curriculum and their learning objectives. They also provide information on content, recommended prior knowledge and literature for preparation.
